Carbon Sciences' Breakthrough Technology Enables Production of Renewable Gasoline and Other Fuels Monday October 6, 10:14 am ET Low Level Hydrocarbons Produced by the Company's CO2-to-Fuel Technology Can Be Used by Existing Oil Refineries to Produce Gasoline SANTA BARBARA, CA--(MARKET WIRE)--Oct 6, 2008 -- Carbon Sciences Inc. (OTC BB:CABN.OB - News), the
developer of a breakthrough technology to transform carbon
dioxide (CO2)
emissions into gasoline and other fuels, today commented
on the application
of its CO2-to-Fuel technology in the production of gasoline
by existing oil
refineries.
With global population projected to increase from 6.5 billion in 2006 to 8.5 billion by 2030, the Energy Information Administration projected that worldwide energy consumption will increase by 50% in the same period. This increase translates to a requirement of over 112 million barrels of crude oil per day, up from the current 90 million barrels per day. The biggest use of crude oil is in the production of liquid fuels for the transportation sector that consumes over 100 million gallons of fuel per hour. Natural crude oil is made of a complex mixture of hydrocarbons of various molecular structures in addition to other organic compounds. Through a range of petroleum refining processes, crude oil is refined into individual products such as gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, solvents, wax and other products. Additionally, gasoline and other liquid fuels can also be produced through a chemical process called Catalytic Reforming where crude oil distillates are reformed into fuel. Catalytic Reforming is a well known process that is a part of existing oil refinery operations. Carbon Sciences' breakthrough technology uses CO2 in a highly scalable and proprietary biocatalytic process to produce low level hydrocarbons that are almost indentical to the feedstock used by Catalytic Reforming units to make gasoline. Therefore, instead of using crude oil as a feedstock for making gasoline, Carbon Sciences' CO2-to-Fuel technolgy can be employed to provide the refinery industry with a renewable feedstock made from CO2 emissions. With over 28 billion tons of CO2 emissions per year, this renewable feedstock has the potential to dramatically curb the demand for crude oil in the production of gasoline and other transportation fuels. Derek McLeish, the company's CEO, commented, "Leveraging on our experience in CO2 transformation technologies, we are very excited about the proprietary innovations in our CO2-to-Fuel technology. When we move into the commercialization phase, we intend to license this technology to oil refineries, as well as large CO2 emitters. Because our CO2-to-Fuel technology utilizes the existing fuel production and distribution infrastructure, our solution can be adopted more rapidly than other renewable energy technologies. With no end in sight to the world's thirst for fuel, we believe that the successful commercialization of our technology will help to increase the global fuel supply, and most importantly reduce our dependency on imported oil." About Carbon Sciences Inc. Carbon Sciences Inc. is developing a breakthrough technology to transform carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions into the basic fuel building blocks required to produce gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel and other portable fuels. Innovating at the intersection of chemical engineering and bio-engineering disciplines, we are developing a highly scalable biocatalytic process to meet the fuel needs of the world. Our solution to energy and climate challenges is a sustainable world of fuel consumption and climate stability by transforming CO2 into fuel. For example, Carbon Sciences' breakthrough technology can be used to transform CO2 emitted from fossil fuel power plants into gasoline to run cars and jet fuel to fly aircraft.
